Mobile browsing now accounts for 56% of all time spent on the internet, with 96% of UK adults now going online via a mobile device. The number of people accessing the internet is increasing year on year. In 2014 22% of internet users considered their smartphone to be their most important device for getting online. By 2015 this had increased to 33% – compared to 30% of internet users who considered laptops to be their most important device for getting online [source].
This rise in popularity is reflected by Google’s search algorithm, which now looks, amongst other things, at whether or not a website contains responsive content. Responsive content is good for mobile users because it automatically resizes depending on the size of the device being used to view it. Google now ranks ‘mobile-friendly’ pages above ones which aren’t optimised for mobile users. See if a page is mobile friendly by entering the URL into Google’s Mobile-Friendly test bar.
